ISSN (International Standard
Serial Number) is the standardized international code that allows
the identification of any serial publication independently of its
country of publication, of its language or alphabet, of its frequency,
medium, etc. By now, the ISSN Network has identified about 0.9 million
titles of serials, and formed a bibliographical database of serials,
which is the largest of its kind in the world.
The ISSN Network was established in 1972, with the supports
of UNESCO and the French government. It is an intergovernmental
cooperative organization consisting of the International ISSN Center
located in Paris, 67 ISSN national centers and the ISSN Regional
Center for Southeast Asia located in Bangkok.
Upon the approval of the Chinese government, ISSN China
Center was established in 1985. Located in the National Library
of China, it is responsible for the registration of serials approved
by the Press and Publications Administration of the People's Republic
of China, the assignment and management of ISSN, the use of ISSN
and the submission of bibliographical records of Chinese serials
to the ISSN International Center. As of the end of 2000, there have
been over 10,000 titles of serials with ISSNs in China.
