China Society
for Library Science
The China Society for Library
Science, an affiliated institution of the National Library of China,
is a national association on librarianship under the joint auspices
of China Association of Science & Technology and Ministry of
Civil Affairs. It functions as a linkage between the Government
and the librarians and plays an irreplaceable role in the development
of the Chinese librarianship.
The predecessor of the society is Library Association of China founded
in 1925. In 1927, the Association was one of the founders, which
jointly sponsored the establishment of the International Federation
of Library Associations (IFLA). The China Society for Library Science
was established in the national conference of librarians held in
Taiyuan, Shanxi Province from July 9 - 16, 1979. The China Society
for Library Science has restored its status of the national association
member in the IFLA in May 1981. As of the year of 2000, the society
has about 10,000 individual members, 47 institutional members. For
the purpose of professional activities, the following committees
are set up under the Society:
1. Academic Research Committee,
2. Editing and Translation Committee,
3. Library Cooperation and Communication Committee.
The responsibilities of the Society include: the national and international
academic cooperation and communications; editing, translating, publishing
books and journals in library and information study; being contributed
to decision-making of national strategic development, policy making
in culture, education, science and technology, economic construction
as well as librarianship; promoting and appraising science research
results; conducting continued education; popularizing basic knowledge
of librarianship; protecting the librarian's rights; other activities
for the members of the Society.
