Measures on the NLC Document Donation (trial)

As the repository of the nation's publications, the National Library of China collects various documents from home and abroad in the round, such as books, periodicals, newspapers, audio-video materials and electronic publications. Since the establishment, this library is indebted to the public for donating various documents, and these donations richen our collections. For the development of document donation, hereby, we publish our measure on document donation (trial) as below for your reading:

I. Collection scope

Our library accepts in the round the donation of domestic and overseas ancient rare books, map & atlas, epigraphs & rubbings, commentaries of renowned scholars, manuscripts of renowned scholars' masterpieces and revolution historical documents which have relatively high values for conservation and research.; for other documentary material varieties that have not been collected by our library or documentary materials that have few copies, this library will take into consideration mainly.

II. Measures on collecting the donations

i. Any donated document that complies with our collection standard but is not collected by us will be formally collected as supplementary for permanent conservation.

ii. Any donated document that complies with our collection standard but has been collected by us, of which copies are not sufficient, will be formally collected or temporarily collected as supplementary according to the requirement of the copy quantity and the tenure of use of the document. Temporary collections will be taken off our shelf at the defined expiration of readers' short-term borrowing.

iii. For any donated document that has sufficient copies or does not belongs to our collection scope of document donation, we will return to its donator; provided that the donator is not willing to accept the returned document or the document can not returned, this library will treat it separately.

III Relevant rights

Once a donated document is accepted and the relevant procedure has been done, its relevant rights, such as ownership and disposal right, will belong to the National Library of China.

IV. Certificate and Thank You Letter

i. For any donated document accepted by this library, either for permanent conservation or temporary borrowing, this library will award an honorary certificate, a certificate that the donated document has been collected by the National Library of China, to its donator.

ii. For any donated document that is not collected by this library and not taken back by its donator, this library will award a Thank You Letter, a certificate that this donation has been received by the National Library of China, to the donator.

iii. For any donated document that is not collected by this library and its donator is not willing to treat it in his/her discretion, we hope the donator takes it back in his/her discretion or entrusts others to take it back (return our Thank You Letter at that time) within 60 days (based on the posting date) on receipt of the Thank You Letter. Provided that the donation is not taken back duly or its donator does not make a respond, this library will treat the donation in its discretion according to our regulations.
