The new NLC Ancient Books Library is the merger of NLC's Rare Books & Special Collections Department and Beihai Branch. There are over 270,000 volumes of Chinese rare books, including over 1,600 rare books in Song and Yuan Dynasties; over 1.64 million general ancient books which consist of over ten thousand titles of chronicles and 3000 titles of genealogies; over 35,000 documents in 16 minority languages; 35,000 pieces of oracle bones, over 80,000 rubbings and over 200,000 ancient and present Chinese atlases. NLC Ancient Books Library has also collected over 25,000 volumes of foreign rare books, including early Western books—the incunabula. In addition, NLC Ancient Books Library preserves over 30,000 contemporary rare books, including mainly books and journals in the Xinhai Revolution period, early translated versions of Marxism-Leninism classics, document of the Chinese Revolution and manuscripts of China's contemporary elites and more.
 
•   China's Rare Books Bibliography Navigation
This Navigation system makes the China's Rare Book Bibliography of string binding digitalized, totalling over 290,000 pieces of information.
•   Oracle Bones
The oracle bones database has the information of 335,651 pieces of NL specially preserved oracle bones, including 3764 pieces of metadata and 7,532 images.
•   Rubbings Collection
Chinese Rubbings Resource Database has over 23,000 pieces of metadata and 29,000 images.
•   Dunhuang Materials
The IDP database in our library has collected the integrated bibliography of Duanhuang documents scattered around China, and bibliography of its research papers and more.
•   Tangut Materials
The database includes 125 pieces of bibliography data of Tangut ancient books in Library collections and nearly 5000 shots of the originals.
•   Digital Chronicles
The database has collected 6,868 titles of ancient local chronicles completed and recovered before 1949, across the periods of Ming, Qing and Minguo.
•   New Year Pictures
NLC has collected more than 4,000 pieces of New Year Pictures. There are 278 pieces of metadata and 278 images in the database.
•   The Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature (Wenyuange edition)
It collects 3,460 titles of books of major ancient records and classics from China's early Qin Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty.
•   Si Bu Cong Kan
It collects 500 titles of ancient books and manuscripts from Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties
•   Minguo Resources Database
The Minguo Resources Database includes the full-text images of 15,028 titles of Minguo books, 8,112 titles of Minguo legal documents, and 4,350 titles of Minguo periodicals.
•   International Union Catalogue of Chinese Rare Books
It describes the rare books collected by 30 libraries home and abroad, amounting to more than 20,000 items, with 14,000 pieces of book cover images included.
•   Full-text Image Database of Chinese Collections collected by Institute of Oriental Culture at the University of Tokyo
4,000 titles of Chinese collections collected by Institute of Oriental Culture are provided for the National Library of China free of charge by manner of digitalization.
The Wenjin Series
Classical Culture Promotion Center of NLC Ancient Books Library is committed to preserving China's excellent ancient books, educating successors of Chinese culture and passing the Chinese civilization on from generation to generation, by providing continuing education and social education. Its Wenjin Academy periodically holds various lectures and has made publications such as Visible Traces and WenJin Xue Zhi. It provides timely updates of the Classical Culture Promotion Center's activity schedules and information, introduces the library's precious collections, recommends new books of classics studies, and shares the working and research experiences, so as to build a network between the readers and our center that helps us to promote China's classic culture and to educate the public.

Reading Room for General Ancient Books
 
Location: A301, Wenjin Building, NLC Ancient Books Library.
Collections: Regular ancient books from the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the Republican period, and reprinted ancient books after 1949. Generally, original copy of any document is not provided for when this document is available via microform copy, photo-offset copy, or digital copy.
Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00 (Service Hours for Requesting Books: 9:00-12:00, 13:00-16:30)

Local Documents Reading Room 1
 
Location: It is temporarily out of service since 5 April 2012, and will be open again in Linqiong Building, NLC Ancient Books Library on 2 May. Collections:Chronicles, local yearbooks, and reference books on chronicle studies published after 1949.
