    Reading and Lending Guides


Reading Guide

  • Readers should scan their own reader's card before entering reading rooms.
  • No bags, personal books, magazines, food and water are allowed in reading rooms.
  • Shelves at the doors of reading rooms are used for keeping materials like bottles of drinks. Readers should be responsible for any lost of important materials stored on the shelves.
  • Library materials in reading rooms are used in the room only.
  • Readers can take at most four books per time and one type of newspaper per time in the open stacks area. Please put the materials in the designated areas and not to re-shelve them.
  • For reading materials in closed stacks, readers need to fill in a request form and submit it to the library staff for retrieval. Materials should be returned to staff after reading.
  • For reading Basic Preservation Publication materials, readers need to search for the bibliographical information of the title in the online public access catalog or card catalog in the Library and submit request to library staff for retrieval. Readers must return the Basic Preservation Publication materials within the same day.
  • For photocopying library materials, readers have to fill in a photocopy request form for processing. Please make photocopy at the designated area and return the library materials immediately after photocopying.
          Readers must not bring out library materials in reading rooms without permissions. Those who violate this rule will be treated as stealing.

    
     Borrowing Guide

  • Readers must hold NLC reader's cards with borrowing privileges to borrow library materials.
  • No bags, personal books and magazines, food and drinks are allowed in the loan stacks.
  • Shelves at the doors of loan stacks are used for keeping materials like bottles of drinks. Readers should be responsible for any lost of important materials stored on the shelves.
  • The borrowing quotas for Chinese and foreign materials are 3 items and the loan period is one month.
  • Readers should check the materials carefully to see whether there is any lost pages, sketches or damages. Readers should report to library staff and the staff will stamp and declare the defect.
    If defects are discovered when the material is returned and not stamped by staff previously, readers will be penalized according to the library policy.
  • If the item is on loan, readers can submit request (including online request) to the Library.
  • If the item needed is not held in the Library, readers can visit the DocumentSupplyCenter to request for an interlibrary loan and pay for the fee.
    Materials borrowed must be returned before due date. Readers have to pay overdue fine for overdue materials.
  • Readers should not bring out library materials in loan stacks without permission. Those who violate this rule will be treated as stealing.
           For borrowing Basic Preservation Publication materials, readers need to submit requests via the            online public access catalog or check the call number in the card catalog. The library staff will            retrieve the needed material.


    Renewal Guide
  • Readers who gain access to Chinese Books Loan Stack I, Chinese Books Loan Stack II and Loan and Reading Room for Chinese Books in the Library of Ancient Books can renew borrowed items. At present, foreign materials cannot be renewed.
  • Readers can use their own reader's card (within the effective period and with no owed fee) to log on the OPAC of the NLC to renew items.
  • Every item can be renewed once. The renewed period is 31 days, which is counted immediately at the day of renewal.

          It is invalid to renew items borrowed while:

  • borrowing is done at the same day.
  • items that are overdue or items requested by other readers are not renewable.
 
   Request Guide
  • Readers who gain access to Chinese Books Loan Stack I, Chinese Books Loan Stack II and Loan and Reading Room for Chinese Books in the Library of Ancient Books can request borrowed items.
  • Readers can use their own reader's card (within the effective period and with no owed fee) to log on the OPAC of the NLC to request items.
  • Requests can be made only when books are borrowed (including being renewed).
  • If many readers request the same borrowed book, priority is given to the one who requests the book first.
  • If the requested book is not returned within the request period, the request will be cancelled automatically.
  • Readers should check for the status of the book frequently. When the status of the book states as “ready for pick up”, the reader should go to the library to borrow the book. The request of the book will be cancelled automatically after 7 days and readers have to pay violating fine 0.3 yuan for each book.

    Approach to Violation of Rules

  • Bringing out books that are non-borrowable

    Readers who bring out books that are non-borrowable without permission must pay the fee for 3-5 yuan per item per day.
  • Overdue

Overdue fee for overdue items: Chinese item: 0.30 yuan per item per day. Foreign item: 0.50 yuan per item per day.

  • Loss

Readers who lose library items must claim the loss and make effort to find the item devotedly. Readers can replace the lost item with the same item with the same edition (or the same item with a newer edition consented by the library) and pay 5 yuan for the processing fee.

Readers who lose library items have 1 month to buy and replace the lost item and cannot borrow items in the library. If readers cannot replace the same item with the same edition (or the same item with a newer edition consented by the library), fine should be paid according to the following standards:
—For books published within the country: 2-5 times of the actual value of the book plus 5 yuan processing fee
—For books published overseas: 3-5 times of the actual value of the book plus 7 yuan processing fee
—For loss of one of the volumes within a title, the actual value of the title is paid. The other volumes cannot be taken after the compensation.
—For books that prices are not marked, fees are paid with reference to similar book price.

  • Damages

Fine for who writes, alters, and damages general library items: 5-20 yuan (according to the level of damage). For readers, who damage items heavily that affect the use of the book, the actual value of the book is fined.

Readers who writes, alters, damage rare books will be penalized according to the Heritage Conservation Law.

  • Tearing

Readers who cut and tear pages on books must pay the actual value of the book. If they cannot pay the book price within a specific period, they have to pay 2-5 times of the actual price. In severe cases with bad attitude of readers, the reader's card of the reader will be cancelled (Deposit acts as the compensation fee). The organization the reader belongs to will be informed and legal actions will be taken. For those who do not belong to any organizations, they will be sent to the police.

  • Theft

The reader's card of the theft will be cancelled. The organization the reader belongs to will be informed and legal actions will be taken.
