Mr. Qian Cunxun's Photo Album (DVD) is Donated to the NLC

After the issuing of Call for Historical Photographs from the Chinese People all over the World, the National Library of China (NLC) received active response of the Chinese people all over the world. On 11 March, Dr. Zhou Yuan, director of East Asian Library, University of Chicago, visited the NLC, and donated Mr. Qian Cunxun's Photo Album (DVD) to the NLC on behalf of Mr. Qian Cunxun. Zhang Zhiqing, NLC deputy director, Yan Xiangdong, director of NLC International Cooperation Division, deputy directors of NLC Library of Ancient Books Su Pinhong and Lin Shitian attended the donation ceremony, and watched the DVD with interest.

Mr. Qian Cunxun, 101 years old, carefully selected many photos and burned a DVD with his nephew Qian Xiaowen's help. The contents of the DVD covered Mr Qian Cunxun's photos from the young to the old age, abundant materials of the Qian family, his works, and many other valuable materials.

Mr. Qian Cunxun was born in Tai County, Jiangsu Province in 1909. He had successively acted as the deputy director of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and director of Engineering & Reference Department, Nanjing Branch of National Library of Peiping. In 1947, as an exchange librarian, he went to America, and worked in the Library of University of Chicago. In 1957, he got the doctor degree of library science in University of Chicago. From 1947 to 1978, he was appointed director of East Asian Library, University of Chicago, and professor of Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. From 1964 t0 1978, he had successively educated more than 30 masters and doctors. After he retired, he acted as honorary professor of Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, honorary director of East Asian Library, and researcher of Needham Research Institute.

Mr. Qian Cunxun devoted his life to the study of library science and history. Through his outstanding research achivements, he introduced the profound history and splendid culture of China to the people all the world on and on, and expounded the contributions of Chinese culture to the world civilization.

In September 2009, during the NLC centennial, Mr. Qian Cunxun had donated his manuscripts, such as History of Chinese Ancient Books, his singing copies, such as Memory in America: Review of the 60 Years in America. During his lifetime, he has always been caring a lot about the NLC, and this time, he donated valuable DVD to the NLC, which made the staff remember with gratitude.
