In the afternoon of June 14th, Liu Yandong, a member of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and a member of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, visited National Ancient Books Exhibition held in NLC Library of Ancient Books, accompanied by Zhou Heping, vice minister of The Ministry of Culture, Zhan Furui, NLC director, Chen Li, NLC deputy director, Zhang Yuhui, NLC deputy director, and Li Zhizhong, director of National Ancient Books PAC Committee.

Liu Yandong said that Chinese ancient books are one of the civilization achievements during the five thousand years' history, which implicate the special spirits, way of thoughts, imagination, and creativity of Chinese people. They are both the cultural heritage of Chinese people and treasures of human civilization. Since the foundation of PRC, with the great care and attention of the Party and government, ancient books preservation and conservation has made great achievements. It is of great significance to rescue, preserve, manage, and reasonably utilize Chinese ancient books under the new historical condition.

Liu Yandong pointed out that ancient books preservation and conservation is an important part of culture heritage preservation and conservation. In the following period, we should stick to the basic guidelines, i.e. preservation and conservation given to the main place, rescue put on the first place, reasonable exploitation, and strengthening management, strengthen scientific planning, and take efficient measures, so as to promote the development of ancient books preservation and conservation. In order to do it well, we should focus on doing the following aspects well. First, we should perfect operation mechanism, cultivate talents, increase financial support, and improve facilities and establishments, so as to create good conditions for ancient books preservation and conservation. Second, we should strengthen management, perfect preservation and conservation system, deploy investigation and registration work, and promote the restoration, publication and utilization of ancient books. Third, we should strengthen the propaganda of ancient books through lectures, exhibitions, etc, which will improve the moral quality and scientific and cultural quality of the mass, and create good atmosphere for ancient books preservation and conservation in the whole society. Finally, we should actively do international exchange and cooperation on ancient books preservation and conservation.
